Rujūlah is the Arabic word for manliness. In the Qur’an, the plural rijāl — men — is often used not simply to mean males, but men who are worthy of the word. When Allah praises men, He praises particular qualities. That is where we start.

1. A man of his word

مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ رِجَالٌ صَدَقُوا مَا عَاهَدُوا اللَّهَ عَلَيْهِ

Among the believers are men who have been true to what they pledged to Allah.Al-Aḥzāb 33:23

The first mark is reliability. The man who says he will be at the run and is there. The man who makes a promise to his wife, his parents, his employer, his Lord — and keeps it. Rujūlah begins with integrity of speech.

2. A man in control of himself

The strong man is not the one who overpowers others; the strong man is the one who controls himself when angry.Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6114 · Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2609

The Prophet ﷺ redefined strength for people who prized wrestling. The real contest is internal. This is why ṣabr sits at the centre of everything we do: the barbell trains the body to hold load, and the same discipline trains the soul to hold its temper.

3. Strong — and trustworthy

The best one you can hire is the strong, the trustworthy.Al-Qaṣaṣ 28:26

These words were said of Mūsā (peace be upon him) after he watered the flock of two women who could not reach the well. Strength and trust are paired. Strength without trust is dangerous; trust without strength is often unable to help. The Prophet ﷺ also said that the strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2664). We train so that our strength can be put at the service of others.

4. A man who is not distracted

رِجَالٌ لَا تُلْهِيهِمْ تِجَارَةٌ وَلَا بَيْعٌ عَنْ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ

Men whom neither trade nor sale distracts from the remembrance of Allah.An-Nūr 24:37

The last mark is priorities. These men work, trade and provide — but their work does not own them. Prayer is not squeezed around the schedule; the schedule is built around prayer. A Fajr run is a small, weekly way to practise exactly that.

What rujūlah is not

It is not loudness, aggression or contempt for others. It is not a performance of toughness. The men the Qur’an praises are described by their faithfulness, restraint, usefulness and remembrance. That is a quieter kind of strength — and a far harder one.

This is the standard of the Sabr & Steel brotherhood. If it is the standard you want to be held to, register your interest in Shura — or bring it to your own area by leading a chapter.
